Feeling that painful burning sensation in the stomach or chest is not fun, but many people actually expect to experience the symptoms of heartburn on a regular basis. In fact, it is estimated that as many as 60 million Americans experience heartburn at least once a month!

Heartburn is the result of stomach acid that backs up into the esophagus. This condition can be caused by: certain types of foods, medications, overeating, tight clothing, weight gain, and other health conditions.

It is important to treat the problem as soon as possible, because long-term suffering with heartburn can actually cause damage to the esophagus… the stomach acid can damage the lining and cause scar tissue to build up. Heartburn may also be associated with an increase in the risk of cancer of the esophagus and/or larynx.

There are a number of over-the-counter and prescription medications that can be used to reduce the symptoms of heartburn, and there are also natural remedies as well…

Would you rather ingest “bismuth subsalicylate” (the active ingredient in many over-the-counter heartburn medications), or a natural essential oil extracted from plants?

The truth is that many pharmaceutical companies mimic the natural compounds that are found in plants! Using essential oils allows a person to experience the benefits of helping their heartburn, without ingesting chemical based medications.

3 of my favorite essential oils for heartburn include: the DigestZen blend (Anise, Caraway, Coriander, Fennel, Ginger, Peppermint, and Tarragon), peppermint, and lemon.

The oils can be used in several ways:

1. Take 1-2 drops internally by dropping them in your mouth, swallowing them in a capsule, or mixing them with a little bit of water and drinking it. Be sure that you are only using high quality oils that can be ingested if you take the essential oils internally.

2. Apply 1 or 2 drops of essential oil on your chest, dilute with a carrier oil such as coconut or almond oil if needed.

3. Apply 1 or 2 drops of essential oil to the reflex points on your feet.

These essential oil natural remedies can be used when the heartburn symptoms begin. Or, if you know that a certain type of food will cause the heartburn to occur, the oils can be used to prevent the symptoms from starting.
