Essential Oils 101

Getting Started with Modern Essential Oils

If you are new to essential oils: Welcome! Keep reading on this website page, because it is an excellent resource to help you get started. I have spent a lot of time researching the topic of essential oils and natural healing, and I put this website together so that other people have a complete resource of information to learn about how to use essential oils.

What Essential Oils Are All About

Many people are familiar with terms such as “natural remedies” or “holistic health.” Essential oils fall within this realm of supporting and healing the body through natural, plant-based modalities. Essential oils are a highly concentrated liquid, derived from plant sources. These oils contain volatile compounds from the plant, and these compounds can be very beneficial to many aspects of health and wellness.

In order to understand the use of essential oils, it is important to learn about which oils to use and how to use them. Many people either don’t know about natural remedies, or they are overwhelmed with all of the information about health and natural wellness… resulting in a cycle of constantly turning to medications to help their health problems (because they aren’t aware of any other options that are available).

Below is my goal with this website:

Creating a healer in every home; Empowering people to use essential oils for safe, natural, and effective remedies for their family.

In other words, I want to help others learn how to use natural remedies as the first line of defense without having to depend on harsh, chemical based medicinal treatments for every health condition. We use essential oils first to support the health of our families, with the understanding that the natural plant compounds are very potent and effective in helping many of the health conditions that may occur.

When I learned how to use essential oils, I literally cleared out my medicine cabinet of all of the unnatural products that were in there– and replaced them with pure essential oils that are used whenever they are needed. It’s truly an amazing feeling and I am so grateful for the knowledge and understanding that I can take control of my own health!

Essential oils have brought about an amazing change in my life, and I’m happy to give back by helping others to take control of their own health through natural remedies. I feel fortunate to have so much wonderful information at my fingertips, and I want to share as much as I can with you!

What Are Essential Oils?

An “essential oil” is a liquid of natural compounds that are extracted from plants. Even though they are called “oils” they are actually not oily in texture– many people think of vegetable oil texture, but essential oils are very light and they quickly absorb into the skin.

These compounds can be extracted from various parts of the plant, including the roots, stems, bark, seeds, and flowers. Plants use these natural compounds in a variety of ways, such as: growing, protecting the plant from the environment, and avoiding disease.

Plants use these natural compounds in a variety of ways, such as: growing, protecting the plant from the environment, and avoiding disease. When these natural compounds are extracted into essential oils, humans can also benefit from the powerful, healing and protective compounds that are available.

The chemical makeup of essential oils is very unique, and it cannot be duplicated by science. In fact, many modern medications are created to attempt to duplicate some of these natural compounds, but the chemical based medications have harsh side effects and they are not as effective as using the natural source of the plant.

Using essential oils will provide you with a variety of health benefits. Research has shown that therapeutic grade essential oils are:

  • Antiviral
  • Antibacterial
  • Antifungal
  • Anticancer
  • Antiparasitic
  • Antiseptic
  • Antimicrobial
  • Anti-infectious
  • Antitumor

Once you learn how to use essential oils, you will see that there is a home remedy for just about every health situation that you may encounter. Of course, there may always be situations where a visit to the doctor is necessary, but it is amazing to see how fast these essential oils can speed up the healing, prevent infection, and treat symptoms that may be occurring.

What Essential Oils are NOT

Using essential oils takes a mental shift, because we have been so conditioned to depend on medication and other unnatural medical treatments. Typically, when a person is sick they go to the doctor, and the doctor often prescribes medication to help the person feel better. It is important to understand that these medications (either over-the-counter or prescriptions) do not solve the root problem, they just mask the symptoms.

Another problem with many medications is the fact that they often have negative side effects, so it is common for a person to take a medication to get rid of a certain set of symptoms only to discover that new health problems emerge as a result of the use of the medication.

Instead of masking the symptoms, it is better to focus on the root of the problem, which is the body’s ability to fight illness and disease. Essential oils do just that: they support the body so that it is more able to minimize disease and illness, which in turn naturally reduces the symptoms associated with the health problem.

Essential oils do not cure anything, but they do support your body so that it can work to cure itself.

Is It Safe To Use Essential Oils?

If you are not familiar with essential oils, then you may be wondering about the safety of these products… will they cause side effects when they are used? There are actually many benefits that can be gained by using essential oils, and they can support your health without the many negative side effects that can occur as a result of many medications.

Because essential oils are extracts of plants, they are completely natural. And, if you are using a high quality oil then you will likely not experience any side effects.

Keep in mind that essential oils are VERY concentrated, and a very small amount can be effective. For example, 1 drop of peppermint essential oil equals 28 cups of peppermint tea!

Some essential oils are so potent that they might irritate the skin unless they are used with a carrier oil, so it is always best to refer to the manufacturer’s recommendations before using each essential oil.

Are All Brands of Therapeutic Grade Essential Oils the Same?

There are no regulatory standards for the term “therapeutic grade,” so it is important to be very careful about the brand that you choose to use. The truth is that the plant source and extraction methods can actually affect the compounds that are present within an essential oil, which in turn can affect the quality, potency and effectiveness of the oil. Additionally, to cut down on costs, some of the lower-quality brands of essential oils will actually add in fillers or synthetic compounds.

Doing some research about the company’s testing procedures and manufacturing processes will help you understand whether or not it is a good quality oil. Also, try comparing essential oil brands side-by-side, and you will be able to notice a difference in quality. Pay attention to the purity of the oil… the scent should not be overbearing because if the smell is too strong it may indicate that it contains chemical synthetic substitutes.

When you are smelling a pure essential oil, you will notice that it smells crystal clean and natural. You can also try testing the feel of different brands of essential oils, if the oil is pure it should easily absorb into your skin without feeling slick or oily.

How to Use Essential Oils

When you read about a specific oil or a specific treatment plan, there are three main methods that may be used to apply the oils:

  • Topical Application: One of the most common uses of essential oils is by applying them topically on the skin. When you are using Certified Pure Therapeutic Grade essential oils, the compounds can quickly be absorbed through the skin and assimilated into your body. Topical application usually occurs either directly on the affected area, or the oils may also be rubbed on the bottom of your feet. The reason oils can be applied to the feet is because the feet contain large pores which can quickly absorb the oils.
  • Internal Supplements: Some essential oils can be taken via mouth in order to gain the benefits that are available. Just 1 or 2 drops are enough to help your body heal, and the oils can be place directly in the mouth or they can be ingested through a small capsule that is swallowed. Very important: ONLY high quality oils can be used internally, because you need to be sure that the oil is free of any chemical or unnatural compounds. Many brands of essential oils specifically state that they should not be used internally, so I suggest that you be sure that you are using a high quality oil, and check the instructions from the oil company before ingesting an oil.
  • Inhalation: When essential oils are inhaled, the senses are heighted and certain reactions within the body can be triggered. You can inhale the oils directly from the bottle or put a few drops in the palm of your hand to smell them. Sometimes, it may be beneficial to use a diffuser to release the essential oils aromatically into the air. This aromatic use will cleanse the air, and you will still be able to gain the benefits as the oil is assimilated through the air into your body.

Sick? How to Choose Which Essential Oils to Use in Any Situation

There are a few resources that you can refer to when you are making the decision about which oils should be used. The important thing to remember is that there is not always 1 specific answer, because often there are multiple oils that can still provide the same benefits.

I prefer to keep on hand a collection of my favorite essential oils, and when a need arises I refer to a few different resources to determine exactly which oils to use and how to use them. In the resources section of this website I have listed my favorite books and online resources which can be used to look up specific health conditions.

The resources page on this website also provides links to reflexology charts so that you know areas of the feet for topical applications, as well as tools and accessories that I like to use with my essential oils.

How Do I Start Using Essential Oils?

There are 2 basic steps to follow if you want to begin using essential oils:

  1. Buy a few essential oils to start your collection. Many people like to begin with a starter kit which contains some of the basic oils that are commonly used, or they choose a few essential oils that are specific to health conditions they would like help with.
  2. Start learning more about how to use each essential oil. I have some helpful books and links available in the resources section of this website.

Hi Maryjane! My original goal with essential oils was to use them for the benefit of my family, and we have had some wonderful experiences with essential oils. The best way to get started is to decide on some specific oils that may be helpful for your personal situation, buy them (either by buying the oils individually or starting out with a kit), and then use them regularly. There are several books and online resources that can be referred to in order to identify the oils that can be used for specific conditions (see the resources tab of this website). Also, feel free to send me an email and I can look through my books to find specific information if you need help knowing some good oils to start with. :)
