Bug Spray With Essential Oils

I love the summertime… except for the fact that the bugs start to come inside this time of year. I don’t mind them outside, but I dislike finding spiders and other creepy, crawly bugs in my house!

Before I learned about natural living, I would buy bug spray at the store and spray around the outside of the house and put a small amount of indoor-”safe” bug spray on some of the baseboards in the home. At the time, I had no idea how toxic it is to use those types of chemicals in my home!

Now that I have learned about natural options, I have decreased the chemical usage in my house and replaced those commercial products with natural alternatives. Essential oils work great for pest control! Here is how I keep the spiders out of my house:

Natural Pest Control With Essential Oils

I bought an empty spray bottle, added some water and peppermint essential oil. You can vary the amount of peppermint that is used, I think I put in about 20 drops of oil for about 20 ounces of water. But, don’t stress too much about the dilution because essential oils go a looooooong way!

Once the water and oil was added to the spray bottle, I tightened down the nozzle and shook the bottle well. Then I used the mixture to spray down the baseboards throughout the home. I also spray around all the edges of the outside doors, both inside and outside. I have found that this keeps the bugs away for awhile, and I try to do it once a month during the summer.

The great thing about using peppermint essential oil for bug control, is the fact that you don’t have to breathe in stinky fumes! I enjoy spraying the baseboards with peppermint essential oil, because it smells great– it’s a 2-for-1 deal because I get the aromatic benefits from the essential oil while I am getting rid of those icky pests!

With love,

Becki :)

I love peppermint oil. I used it last year to get rid of the ants that were in are house. When you spray it on your baseboards…do you wipe it up with a cloth or just let it dry by itself?

Hi Amber! I usually just spray it and let it dry… I’m too lazy to wipe it while I go, LOL! I have wiped the baseboards in the past when I was spraying them, but it was a 2-for-1 to clean them while I was spraying for bugs. :)

Peppermint oil was one of my favorites for mice control as well. I would use a dropper and create a line of pure peppermint oil along the base of my house in the fall. We did not have any mice that winter!

Great tip, thanks for the idea Rozetta!
